Abstract

In the first stage, the pH of the bleaching soln. is adjusted to 3.5, pref. 3.0, esp. 2.5 and the ClO2 charge in the first stage is kept below that which is normal for chlorination at 0.6-1.0, esp. 0.7-0.95 times the Cl no. w.r.t. the %age of active Cl in the pulp. The pH can pref. be adjusted with residual acid from ClO2 mfr. or with waste liquor from the acid bleaching stages, e.g., the first stage. The pulp concn. is 8-16% and the temp. 30-50 degrees C. The pH value not only increases the reaction rate considerably but also makes the reaction more effective, possibly by contributing to the dissoln. of lignin. Birch sulphate pulp was bleached by the D-E-H-D-E-D process. In the first stage, bleaching was carried out at a pulp concn. of 4% for 40 mins. at 30 degrees C, using 21.6 (25.5) kg. ClO2/t. and pH 3.1 (5.0). The ISO brightness of the pulp was 886. (86.0)% and the viscosity 960 (780)dm3/kg. The chemical cost was 89:40 (107:85) Swedish kroner/t.
