Abstract

The specific average pore dia. (p) of silica is increased by hydrothermal treatment in presence of NH3 or cpds. of Li, K, Na, Cs, Rb, Ca, Sr, Ba or NH4 (I). The hydrothermal treatment may be carried out at elevated temps. with liq. water or with steam. Pref. the silica is treated with (I) before the hydrothermal treatment, e.g. by impregnating it with an aq. soln. of (I) and drying and opt. calcining the prod. Alternatively, the hydrothermal treatment may be carried out e.g. with steam contg. NH3. The treated silicars are useful as catalysts and catalyst carriers, esp. for hydrocarbon treatment processes such as hydrogenation, desulphurisation and demineralisation of residual oils.
