Abstract
The admission of air into the engine is controlled to reduce the volumetric efficiency. The control can be achieved by a throttling valve (V) in the suction manifold or by regulation of the opening of the inlet valves. In both cases it is operated by a mechanism which reacts to the pressure in the suction manifold, the engine speed and temp. and atmospheric pressure. A spring loaded membrane (A) is subjected to inlet pressure (N) and acts on one end of a layer (F). The other end is acted on by a link which is balanced between an engine driven cam (C) and a lever acted on by atmospheric pressure (E) and engine temp. (D).
