Abstract

Stoichiometric TiS2 having a low crystal aspect ratio is obtd by heating particulate Ti to 475 degrees-600 degrees C in a atmos. having a S partial pressure equal to equilbrium S partial pressure over TiS2 at reaction temp. Amts. of Ti and S used are stoichiometric and temp. is held for sufficient time to homogenise TiS2. Ti is pref. sponge of particle size 100%-4 mesh to 100% + 40 mesh. Pref. reaction is carried out in an elongated vessel contg. a hot zone for the Ti and a cool zone in which S can condense. Hot zone temp. is 500-550 degrees C and cool zone is 50-300 degrees C lower. This enables S partial pressure to be controlled. Prod. is useful as cathode material in secondary batteries. By avoiding temps. >600 degrees C method yields a prod. having desirable crystal and size properties.
