Abstract

A photosensitive diazo compsn. comprises (a) a diazonium cpd. (I), (b) an azo coupler precursor which can be converted into an active coupler in the presence of an acid, (c) a photosensitive acid precursor and (d) an acid anhydride. Pref. (I) is a diazonium salt of a Lewis acid complex anion and the salt as equally the acid precursor. Pref. the compsn. comprises (a) the diazonium salt, (b) an azo coupler precursor having an aliphatic substituent linked via O to aryl coupling fragment, and (c) an anhydride which is pref. maleic, succinic, glutanic, isotoic, naphthoic, phthalic, mellitic, acetic, glycolic, benzoic or butylric anhydride, these being opt. substd. Used for direct prodn. of negatives without need for a second printing step to achieve image sign reversed. It is not necessary to decompose the diazo material which has not reacted. No toxic vapours are emitted during development with alkaline medium. Photographic speeds are 2-3 x higher than with known diazo cpds.
