Abstract
A dry tower with a series of cooling elements pref. finned tubed bundles is used to cool a hot fluid to a required temp. To prevent the cooled fluid dropping below a certain critical temp. an adjustable supplementary amount of fluid can be passed through some or all of the elements. A supplementary flow through all of the cooling elements is obtd. by putting in a recirculation, complete with pump and valve for control and recycling some of the cooled fluid to the hot fluid header at the inlet to the elements. With several cooling elements in series the flow through some of them is increased by injecting some of the hot fluid at the inlet to some of the elements in the series. The hot fluid for injection is taken off from the inlet line to the first cooling element and is branched into the required elements downstream from the first. A combination of the recycling circuit and the injection circuit both with adjustable flow can be used to provide the supplementary flow. Used in dry cooling towers for liqs. that may change state or begin to crystallise if cooled too much. Towers allow the temp. control of the final cooled liquid.
