Abstract

A marine tanker for transporting low temp. liquid gas, has the walls of its tank in the form of a membrane made up of a large number of cells. Each cell consists of a flat base sheet and a curved top sheet this being supported by a set of partitions between them, at right angles to the base sheet, as seen in cross-section. The top of one cell is concave and the top of the adjacent cell is convex, the top sheet being made up of a series of these alternating curves. In plane view, two sites of each cell are convex, while the other two sides are concave. Selected cells can be in communication, and selected partitions not attached to the base layers. The membrane may be made of reinforced or non-reinforced plastics. Used for transporting liquidified natural gas etc.
