Abstract
Rubber is incorporated into a tile cement mixt. for improved sound absorbance, by using a soln. of rubber latex to wet a dry premix of cement and sand to be used as a mortar layer for supporting metal, plastic or ceramic tiles. Pref. the wall is first covered with a rubber-filled dressing or with an adhesive-bonded layer of plastic sheet or tiles, e.g. of expanded polystyrene. Joints between the sub tiles are covered with tape to prevent penetration between the sub-surface tiles of the cement superimposed for the surface tiles. Any pipes which traverse the walls are isolated by foam collars to suppress sound transmission. Pref. an intermediate layer of rubberised cement is interposed between the sub-tiles and the cement layer used to hold the surface tiles. The layers may be of similar or differing compsn. The joints between the surface tiles may not require grouting.
