Abstract

A metal bar shaping method using tungsten carbide tools and which may contain other elements such as titanium carbide, is used for removing e.g. the rough outer portion of forged round bar. Larger cuts may be carried out at the same time. These reductions in diameter may have different angles of slop and of different amounts. The cutting tools can be multi-sided, giving four cutting positions and four stop positions. A cutting operation can be made in four passes, the angle of the cutting faces for the auxiliary cut being double that for the main cut. The angle for the auxiliary cut can be between 105 deg. and 130 deg.. This cutting tool can be preceded by a circular cutter.
