Abstract
The photomultiplier-based system for measuring low light levels is esp. suitable for use in fluorescence and chromatographic measurements. The output of the measuring cell is transmitted through a light-guide and filter to a secondary-electron multiplier tube. The output pulses corresponding to the individual photons, are amplified and pass through a threshold circuit for noise and interference suppression. They are then converted into pulses of constant amplitude and width by a multivibrator-limiter shaper. The pulses are then integrated at a predetermined rate of up to 107 pulses/sec. The system thus operates independently of the stability of the photo-multiplier tube.
