Abstract
An object which is resistant to high temps. is mfd. by immersing a ligneous material in an aq. soln. of a salt such as NaCl, pref. maintained in a boiling state, drying to reduce the humidity content to ca 12%, impregnating with a silicate of esp. Na or Ca, coating with pure kaolin or kaolin contg. 5-10% moltent cement, compacting at 0.5-2 kg/cm2 and at 100-140 degrees C for ca/1 min. The object is dried completely and briefly fired for several seconds at 500 degrees C. The heat resistant object may be planar or shaped and can have large dimensions. The object can be vitrified and used as thermal shields, fire-resistant, partitions or decorative elements which are resistant to high temps.
