Abstract

Method of filling a vessel, esp. a tanker wagon for radioactive liqs. utilises vacuum for drawing the liqs. into the vessel and probes or detectors for measuring the max. level in the vessel. The successive batches of different contaminated or radioactive liqs. are introduced into the vessel, the individual level at each batch being regulated by the value of the vacuum in the vessel, until the final max. level of liq. is attained. Pref., there are two limiting values of the vacuum; when the higher limiting value, i.e., the lower pressure, is reached the vacuum pump line is closed and the liq. suction line is opened; liq. is then drawn in by the vacuum until the second, lower limiting value, i.e. a higher press. is reached, when the vacuum pump line is opened and the liq. suction line is again closed. Used for liqs. of medium to high radioactivity, esp. in the range 10-1-10-3 Ci/m3. The method ensures that the tank cannot be overfilled, since the vacuum pump line and the liq. suction line into the tank can never be open simultaneously i.e. as the vessel is progressively filled the time between the opening of the liq. filler line and its automatic closure as a result of the second limiting value being reached becomes progressively shorter until finally a minimum is reached.
