Abstract

Single sided galvanising of metal strip is achieved by applying a coating of Zn continuously to one side of a moving strip outside the galvanising bath. The appts. consists of. after the heat treatment furnace, an intermediate reservoir contg. a liq. which does not adhere to the strip, this liq. ensuring air tightness of the furnace w.r.t. to the air outside; guides to conduct the strip into the reservoir; a coating roller partially immersed in the galvanising bath and which coats the desired side of the strip with Zn; wipers and a chamber in which the galvanized strip is cooled. Single-sided galvanized sheet can be welded (on the uncoated side) to other steel products e.g. in automobile bodywork where the inner surface is galvanised an in floor pans where the lower side must be protected against corrosion but the upper side must be welded to the bodywork.
