Abstract

The smooth speed control of a series motor (2) is achieved by shunting its main field (8) with an auxiliary exciter (11). The field (20) of the exciter (11) is typically controllable in magnitude and sign so that the series motor field (8) can be either bucked or boosted to give the required speed or output. This form of regulator also allows full utilisation of the series motor in a dynamic braking mode. The exciter can be switched out (16) when not required and, by providing a selector (6, 6a, 24) the machine may also be switched to entirely separate excitation. The latter connection is useful in the braking state.
