Abstract

A flat semi-rigid plastic article, which can be printed on or receive magnetic impressions, has an adherent film on >=1 of its faces. This consists of a material absorbent to inks and a binding material distributed in it, the respective wt. ratio being 2-10, pref. 5. The plastic film support is pref. PVC, polyethylene, polyester or a mixt. of PVC and chlorinated polyethylene. The ink-absorbent material is pref. talc or colloidal silica, and the binding material is pref. a polyvinyl aceto-chloride, polyvinyl acetate, or a vinyl terpolymer, such a polymer having an affinity for the support. The adherent film is pref. applied from a dispersion in a volatile solvent, which swells the plastic support surface, and is subsequently removed. There are a large number of uses, typified by transport season tickets, identification cards, marking labels, credit cards. Good printing by all kinds of inks is obtd., the ink penetrating easily, without running, and standing up well to handling. Magnetic characters are also well received by the surface layer, which adheres strongly, even to a very smooth plastic surface. A good elasticity prevents it from breaking or cracking due to bending, and it is inert to water and humidity. It resists ageing satisfactorily, and is partic, resistant to friction.
