Abstract

The sides of large ships are washed or painted by a cage (53) operating vertically and horizontally along its surface. The cage is attached to a cable (63) suspended from a stand-off arm over the side and fixed by chains to points on the deck above. A follower enables profiled sides to be followed. The cage has a windlass (83) powered by an electric motor controlled by a seated operator (86e. This cable runs over pulleys (85) to move the cage vertically. One or more spray guns or water jets (87) are fixed (79) each side (81) of the cage and are adjustable transversely for distance.
