Abstract

A container with a self-locking cover has its upper open end flared outwards forming a conical rim. The cover is hollowed so as to form a conical part corresp. to the conical rim of the container. The edge of the cover is turned downwards and inwards so as to enclose the top of the cover and to form a gutter. A spring fits in the gutter. The spring has projecting inclined parts which straighten when the cover is being put on, but resume their inclined position when it is on. The conical rim of the container acts as a ratchet to prevent the cover being removed. A ring can be operated by remote control to straighten the spring when the cover has to be removed. The container is used partic. for transporting radioactive wastes without manual handling. It is simple to operate, closure is quick and safe and the cover can withstand large pulling forces.
