Abstract
A process for making a leather resistant to prolonged contact with calcium chloride is described. After normal chrome tanning, the leather is re-tanned first with glutaraldehyde and then after neutralising in another bath with synthetic or plant tannins. In the course of the retanning the leather is nourished using a sulphited animal oil. The re-tanned leather is then impregnated using chromium stearatochloride, polyfluorane or aliminium stearate. A polyalcohol is then added followed by stirring after which the leather is curried, dried and finished in the usual manner. The leather obtained retanned with 5% glutaraldehyde and 12-16% tannins and treated as abovefinally using 1% polyalcohol has a resistance falling by 8%, compared with 40% for untreated leather, in a Bally penetrometer test using a specific CaCl2 soln. The leather is particularly used for making safety shoes e.g. for workers in mines.
