Abstract
A modified mould is used in the prodn. of ingots of alloy and non-alloy steel with improved primary crystallisation, reduced major segregation and reduced non-metallic inclusions. As normally, the liquid steel filled into the mould is covered with a mixt. of molten slag. Whilst the steel solidifies, the slag is cooled laterally and an electric current corresponding to 120 kwh per ton of ingot, is passed through it, the bath of liquid slag being cooled sufficiently to form and maintain a solidified layer. When solidified, the ingot standing on a baseplate is disengaged at its upper end, where it was at the start limited by the mould which is not cooled by liquid, and the ingot is lifted off by the tongs. System makes it possible to remove the ingot from a mould uncooled by liquid without any difficulty.
