Abstract
Battery cell with aq. electrolyte has an inverted electrode arrangement. The cell includes a metal container acting as cathode current collector in direct contact with a depolarising mass inside it, which has in the same medium, a lower potential than that of the container. The depolarising mass consists of a mixt. of carbonaceous and graphitic materials, an aq. electrolyte, a reducible mineral or organic cpd. the potential of which is less than the oxidn. potential of the cathodic collector, and at least one metallic additive in the form of its oxide. The negative is arranged in contact with the interior of the depolarising mass and consists of a gp. I-IV metal. The negative electrode is covered with a film forming a separator between it and the depolarising mass. A bottom cover closes the open base of the container. It is mechanically bonded to the negative electrode and attached to the negative lead of the cell. The novelty is that the metallic additive to the depolarising mass is an oxide of a gp. IV transition metal or an actinide or lanthanide and constitutes 10-30 wt.% of the dry wt. of depolarising mass. The organic and mineral reducible parts form 50-70% of the dry weight. The metallic additive is particularly effective when in the form of an oxide of a transition metal.
