A dry cell comprises a zinc container 2 and a cathodic current collector constituted by an electrolyte-permeable body 1 conforming in shape with the container 2 but separated therefrom by a separator 3, and surrounding the depolarizer 4. As shown, the current collector 2 is made of carbonized textile material and its turned-in top 5 is contacted by carbon disc 6 with a conventional terminal 8. The current collector may also be made of expanded metal or gauze. The metal may be electrolyte-resistant, e.g. Ti or Ta, or rendered electrolyte-resistant by a conductive carbon paint.
