Abstract

In the case of the transformer which has windings which can be switched over and are intended for connection to power supplies of various voltages and at different frequencies, it is proposed in order to reduce the structural size and weight and in order to save material that the transformer be designed, in terms of iron, for the higher power supply frequency (for example 50 Hz), said transformer having switching means (25, 27) for DC-decoupling the primary winding (21) from the secondaries (22, 23) at this frequency. In the event of the transformer being connecting to a power supply at a lower frequency (for example 16<2>/3 Hz), the number of turns of the primary winding (21) is increased, by means of further switching means (24, 26), by series connection to at least one of the secondary windings (23), cancelling the DC-decoupling for this winding (23) and its load. Such transformers are suitable for railway vehicles which cross international boundaries, with respect to the overhead-wire systems which differ in the individual countries.
