Abstract

An applied coating containing volatile products is dried on a web face by feeding the web at a rate of >=50 ft/min. past a station which has a high capacity burner. A combustible air-gas mixture is supplied to sustain a stable flame sheet with its tis in contact with the sheet. The flame evaporates and ignites the volatile products. Stable air sheets are directed at 400-1700 ft/min. into contact with the sheet on opposite sides and at a spacing from the flame sheet of =1 in., so that the evaporated products are completely burned in a fixed zone. For drying decorative coatings of e.g.inks or protective or decorative coatings on paper, plastic or metal such as can bodies. By blocking the volatiles with air streams so that they are prevented from following the travelling web they are also kept within close ignition of each other and of the flame sheet.
