Abstract

1,175,460. Drying printed webs; burners. W. G. WISE. 25 May, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 24406/67. Headings F4G and F4T. In apparatus for drying printing ink or other marking or coating material applied to a moving web or sheet material 31, a flow of the products of combustion of a gas burner 11 is intercepted by and mixed with a flow of fresh air from an adjacent nozzle 27 prior to the products impinging on the web so that the combined flows wipe the web and the solvents evaporated from the ink or the like are not combusted. The burner 11 comprises a conduit 16 with an elongated indentation 12 of U-shaped crosssection into which orifices 15 lead. An alternative form of burner, 300, Fig. 7, comprises square tubing 303 having holes 301 drilled therein which are protected by shields 302 to form an elongated U-shaped area 305 for burning gases. The shields are spaced from the tubing by washers 306 to provide air insulation spaces between the shields and tubing.
