Abstract
A ring main comprising a phase conductor, neutral conductor, and signal wire connects loads and controls together throughout the building or sections of it. The controls each generate a unique signal to which loads tuned to that signal will respond. The information may be transmitted by impulses, voltage level, phase displacement, or similar. The advantage of the signal wire system is the ease with which alterations to circuits and controls can be made. Each unit, control or load, contains an exchangeable plug-in signal element, thus merely by altering these elements the switching point or selection of loads can be altered without the need for access to the wiring. The system is also well localised and does not need mains filters or signalling appts.
