Abstract

Fire-resistant protective coating for material such as metal, wood, etc. esp. for use around steam turbines, steam generators, etc. and for protecting building structures against acids, comprises a compsn. based on a soluble glass cpd., a hardener and an inert filler. the hardener which is used in amt. 3-20 wt.% of the coating, is a metal ammonium phosphate contg. >=30 wt.% P2O5, >=10 wt.% metal oxides and =3 wt.% ammonium. The inert filler is used in amt. 30-60 wt.% and the balance is soluble glass. The hardening time is much reduced compared with prior art coatings of similar type. Hardening takes place uniformly throughout the mass of the coating, without exfoliation, crack formation of migration of the soluble glass to the surface.
