Abstract

The elastomerically (3) cushioned ball end for a vehicle towing attachment may be freed during extreme manoeuvres such as parking so that the elastomer is not subject to excessive shear loads. Flats (47) are cut in the shank (2) of the ball end and normally register in corresponding flats (46) in an eye (42) which slides horizontally between the fork ends (40) of the towing attachment. The normal position of the eye is maintained by a spring (48) bearing on both the eye (49) and the towing bracket (50). During manoeuvres requiring large displacements, the spring is compressed and the eye retained in this position by a vertical pin passing through holes (56) in the fork ends and (57) in the eye. In this position, the whole of the ball and shank fitting is free to turn.
