Abstract

Gas is fed into a main conduit which is partly or totally immersed in the liq. into which the gas is to be injected. That part of the conduit immersed in the liq. has many tubes of small inside dia., i.e. 2 mm and length >=20 times the dia. projecting from its surface into the liq. The gas passes up these tubes and is released at the tube ends as fine bubbles, the ends of the tubes moving in the liq. under the influence of the release of the bubbles and the currents in the liqs. These small injection tubes can be flexible or rigid and attached to the main conduit by a flexible connection. The main gas carrying pipe can be circular oblong or any other shape, or can be in the form of an annular conduit around walls or bottom of a vessel with the fine tubes projecting into the liq. Another alternative is to have the fine gas outlet tube surrounded by another tube up which a liq. is passed to cause the bubbles to detach from the gas tube. Used for injecting gases into liqs., e.g. in fermentation and for biological control of the oxygen requirement in polluted waters. Allows great uniformity of the injection of bubbles of the desired dia.
