Abstract
The by-pass or tapping device for multimode optical fibres, comprising a core surrounded by a material of lower refractive index. The fibres whose light (6) is to be tapped is connected to a section of optical fibre having alternating curves which induce a succession of mode transportation in the light propagating in the core of the fibres. There are sufficient mode changes to ensure that the final value of the propagation constant is below the lower limit for propagation in the core. Thus the light whose propagation contact has been reduced, propagates in the surrounding material.
