Abstract
1501265 Light guides WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 24 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 12247/75 Heading G2J An optical fibre comprises an elongated filament having at least one helicoidal surface ridge surrounding it, the cross-sectional dimensions and the helical period of the ridge being such that the light can be propagated in at least one guided mode therethrough. The ridge and filament are preferably of the same material, e.g. fused silica, and the exposed surfaces of the fibre may be clad with a material of lower refractive index. In one embodiment, see Fig. 4 (not shown) the filament which is unclad, has additionally a pair of helicoidal supporting ridges which are fused to the interior surface of a hollow cylinder serving as a protective casing, and an optically non-linear material may be placed within the cylinder in contact with the light guide ridges over selected lengths.
