Abstract

Laminate consists of a solid base made of lightweight metal, e.g. Al, Mg, Zn, or an alloy thereof with other metals; a thin layer of thermosetting plastic or thermoplastic material >=40 mu thick which adheres to the base; and >=1 outer metal layer resistant to external agents and each with a thickness of >=1 mu. In an example, an Al alloy profile is degreased with trichloroethylene, treated with caustic soda, and left for 20 secs., at ambient temp. in a circulating bath in which a thermosetting epoxy resin powder is applied electrostatically. It is then treated for 30 mins. in a bath at 190 degrees C. The article is degreased, rinsed, and superficially attacked in successive baths of ammonimum persulphate, 10% of H2SO4, and 25% HCl, and after coating with a conductive lacquer, treated with 20% H2SO4, then coated electrostatically with a thick layer of Cu.
