Abstract
The fabrication of aluminium alloy wheel discs for heavy lorries with tubeless pneumatic tyres has two stages forming the disc (7) from a rough cylindrical ingot, and a machining and finishing stage. The primary stage involves stamping and formative pressing operations. A crudely formed peripheral flange is produced parallel to the wheel axis. The second stamping extends the flange and roughly forms the rim. A final stamping extends both rim (12) and flange (11) to their required length. A formative pressing obtains the flange in its machinable form. The flange (11) is initially conical and progressively extended and reduced in thickness.
