Abstract

The die comprises a steel support the work surfaces of which are coated with a layer contg. Ni phosphide, the phosphide layer itself being coated with a WC-base layer or a layer comprising mainly a mixt. of WC and W. The layer contg. WC reduces adhesion between Al and the die surface, minimising roughening of the extruded metal. The intermediate layer between the WC layer and the steel acts as a crack-propagation barrier. The WC layer can be removed and replaced by dissolving in an aq. soln. of NaOH and H2O2 at room temp. Since NaOH alone only reacts slowly with the WC layer it can be used for cleaning i.e. removal of residual Al.
