Abstract

A portable plant for electron beam welding in vacuo can be placed on the workpieces being welded. Appts. includes (a) several separate vacuum chambers with separate pumps, including a high voltage chamber, work chamber, and chambers forming seals with the workpieces; the chambers can be isolated for testing; (b) A rotating plate sepg. the high voltage chamber form the work chamber; the plate can be changed to suit the workpieces. The plate is connected to an electron gun via. a membrane permitting the raidal, axial and angular displacement of the gun, which is mounted on a holder centred on a workpiece. The gum is guided by motors, redn. gear trains and controllers.
