Abstract

New water-insoluble salts of bismuth give no neurological toxic signs in male mice 30 days after an i.p. injection of a suspension of the salt in an isotonic mixt. of water and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) >=2.5 g/kg in a volume of 1 ml/20 g bodyweight. Heavy or light basic bismuth nitrates, bismuth carbonate or bismuthyl chloride are specifically used. Salts are used in treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, with no neurotoxicity. Typically, light basic bismuth nitrate is extracted three times, with intermediate centrifugations, with 50% aq. ethanol and the conductivity is reduced from 2050 to 300 mu mhos/cm.
