Abstract

This flapping wing (23) flying machine has wing supports mounted on a horizontal frame (4) to which wheels (28/29) are attached. To cause the wings to flap, a bicycle wheel (11) is supported on a horizontal axle in a fork (17) connected to upright supports, the axle being mounted in slots (2a,2b) which allow the wheel to move up and down. The movement is caused by the wheel tyre bearing on a rotating cam (9) mounted between the supports and below the wheel. As the wheel moves up and down, the motion is transmitted to a rod (18), pushing the inner ends of the wing spars and flapping the wings. The bicycle wheel may be driven by pedals (12, 13) or by a motor via a friction roller (14) and the drive may also be connected to the ground wheels by a chain fitted with a spring tensioner.
