Abstract
Generally conventional pressure fired steam generator operates at a pressure of 9 bar or more, produced by a blower driven by a gas turbine powered only by exhaust gas from the generator. Generator output is controlled by a steam pressure sensor actuated servo-system which regulates fuel flow directly and matches air flow indirectly. At high power this is done via a sleeve valve whose movement varies the discharge flow from a secondary servo-system. This in turn alters the system pressure and thence the setting of the spring-loaded servo which controls gas turbine speed by way of the gas temperature at exit from the generator. A mechanical governor maintains the selected speed in the same way. To reduce air flow at lower power further than is possible using blower speed, without a striking loss of efficiency, a further servo come into action when the speed control unit reaches a bottom limit stop. This servo alters blower stator and possibly rotor blade angles.
