Abstract
Formation of a joint free refractory lining for a tundish ladle or other chamber receiving molten metal comprises using a pasty or powdery mass contg. >=1 exothermic component esp. an aluminothermic component, >=1 binder and >=1 component which exhibits refractory properties on firing. The mass is applied to the interior of the chamber esp. with the aid of a mould framework, and allowed to harden. The lining is ignited by provoking an exothermic reaction which produces a rapid increase in temp. producing simultanensouly the refractory layer required. The cost of relining is reduced. Avoidance of joints in the lining enables weak, corrosion-sensitive locations to be avoided.
