Abstract

The retractable bunk beds (1, 2) are flat rectangular open topped boxes which pivot about a horizontal long edge, to rotate form a horizontal deployed position in to a vertical retracted position. A double bunk unit may comprise a subframe (Ci, C2) which contains two bunk units (1, 2). The frame houses the two bunks when vertical, one on top of the other, and with long edges horizontal. The bunks are fixed securely into the frames by spindles, (3, 4). Each unit has a folding leg (6 to 8) on each of the two free corners. The legs serve both as props for deployed bunks and anti-rotation stays for retracted bunks. In the case of deployed double bunks the bottom bunk (6, 7) may bear on the floor and the top bunk legs (8, 9) may bear on the outer corners of the bunk below.
