Abstract
A sludge waste stream is treated by coagulating the sludge by means of mineral coagulants, mechanically dehydrating the sludge, and drying the dehydrated sludge to 10-50% (10-30%) moisture content by means of a gaseous heat-carrier with an initial temp. of 600-900 degrees C under countercurrent and air-stream conditions, and adding dried sludge to the coagulation step in an amt. to give a 50-120 g/litre sludge mixt. Smaller amts. of coagulants are used. The capacity of the treatment plant is increased. The slurry has a low water content after dehydration. Industrial wastes or sewage can be treated. The prod. can be used as fertiliser, giving 1.5-25 x increase in yield and better soil structure. The fertiliser can be used once in 3 years at a rate of 10-15 tons/hectare. If the sludge contains toxic components it may be burned or taken to tips.
