The low binder content granular carpet for surfacing highways, obviates low temperature brittleness and high temperature deformation, and has crushed rock with a grading curve falling with a narrow zone and a hydrocarbon binder as constituents. The proportion of binder is such that inter-particle cohesion is obtained solely via the interlocking of the granular particles under compaction and traffic. For richness modules of 2.8 to 3.5 binder quantities are from 5 to 7% of aggregate weight. The binder is of low viscosity and is added hot in sufficient quantity to cover granules with a film without inhibiting particle interlocking under compaction, aggregate size also being dictated by this requirement.
