Abstract

The auto-retracting guard portable grinding tool on an electric or pneumatic is a two-piece (4, 6) flanged disc. The disc flanges return to cover the working periphery of the grinding wheel (3). Each disc guard covers 180 deg. of the periphery of the grinding wheel. When the wheel starts to rotate the retractable half (6) of the disc guard rotates 180 deg. to be housed within the static guard (4). The retractable guard (6) may be attached to a rotatable plate (7) in turn mounted on the nose (5) of the tool. A sprung (15) sliding pin (13) set in the plate (7) engages (16) a notch (17) in the grinder appendage (12). After following the grinding wheel (3) for half a turn the pin (13) encounters a ramp and disengages from the notch (17). The plate is maintained in this position during grinder use by a pneumatic or electro-magnetic piston (23) engaging a recess (25). A spiral spring (10) rotates the guard back when the wheel (3) ceases to rotate.
