Abstract

A low-density high strength expanded alkali metal silicate building material is produced by homogeneously mixing an aq. soln. of an alkali metal silicate with a pore-producing agent comprising a mixt. of finely divided Al and Si, and with a finely divided active charge, pouring the mixt. into a perforated mould larger than the volume of the mixt. to allow its expansion and removal of heat and steam produced by the reaction and separating the mould from the product which has been dried by the heat evolved. A low-density high strength material with a practically uniform pore size is obtd. without requiring external heating. The material can be used to insulate buildings by an 'in situ' process.
