Abstract

A nuclear reactor, esp. a pressurised water power reactor comprises a column-shaped core with in-core neutron flux detectors and also neutron flux detection chambers outside the pressure vessel and temp. measurement equipment. Either (a) only in the core centre or (b) at a minimum of 4 peripheral points around the vessel and also in the core centre, there are a number of neutron flux external chambers distributed through the core height. A number of multiple (esp. 4-fold) temp. detectors esp, thermocouples are distributed across the core at top and bottom. These detectors and the flux external chambers are electrically connected to a measuring device to indicate the local power density. Chambers at the centre are pref. surrounded by a protective tube. Neutron flux external chambers are used, instead of neutron detectors, inside the core. The former are much more robust. In addn. with this arrangement, they are replaceable, without shutting down the reactor. The top and bottom distribution of temp. detectors gives a good additional spread of radial and azimuthal readings.
