Abstract
Design for peripheral segments of a horizontal tyre mould. The tread walls are mounted on sliding blocks closed by spring-loaded rams and contained in an annular chamber into which steam can be admitted. The steam provides both heat and the pressure to hold segments closed against the thrust developed by an internal carcass consolidation bladder. Esp. useful for moulding large tyres. Simple in design with nearly all the heavy components supported by the base of the machine. Differing heat treatment can be applied to the inner and outer faces of the carcass, by using different steam pressures. Mount bladder pressures of e.g. 30 kg/cm2 may be opposed by tread block back pressures of e.g. 16 kg/cm2 steam, because of the relatively greater surface areas of the tread block supports.
