Abstract

The automatic character reader uses a television camera, for scanning the characters printed on a ticket according to a given elemental matrix, with selected darkened zones, so that the characters can also be seen by the eye. Each ticket has a horizontal and vertical reference trace, with a reference mark (1) at the head of each column of the matrix and a reference mark (2) at the front of each line. For each scanning frame of the camera, the horizontal reference trace (1) is used for the horizontal control and the latter is conjunction with the vertical reference trace (2) causes the output signals from the camera to build up a binary matrix representing the scanned character. This binary matrix has a binary value of '1) for each darkened zone of the character matrix and a binary value of '0' for each lighter zone.
