Abstract

The rotor disc (1) carries, symmetrically spaced around its periphery, blades (6) whose cross-section in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation is half moon shaped, located in a toroidal chamber (7) with generous clearance on three sides. Blades taper at both edges, and both blade faces meet the tangents to the cylindrical envelopes formed by the blade edges at an acute angle. The casing has two openings either inlets or outlets to minimise fluid leakage through it when the machine is in use. Various flow-smoothing devices can be incorporated. Trials of a compressor version, built to commercial standards, indicate 50% efficiency - an improvement of 30-40% on comparable designs.
