Abstract

An aq. detergent compsn. comprises (A) 40-87% (pref. 50-70% and esp. 60-70%) of a 10-24C olefin sulphonate, (B) 3-50% (pref. 3-25% and esp. 4-10%) of a carboxylate RCOOM (where R is H or 1-9C alkyl and M is alkali metal, ammonium, lower alkanolammonium or lower alkylammonium) and (C) 5-57% (pref. 10-47% and esp. 20-36%) of water. The prepn. of the compsn. comprises reacting SO3 (0.85-1.3 mols/mol) with the olefin at 0-100 degrees C for 0.1 right arrow 60 secs. The product is then mixed with Na, K or NH4 hydroxide in the presence of cpd. (B) above with a total of 5-57% water and the ratio of (A): (B) being from 87:3 to 4:5. Used in detergents, previous olefin sulphonate compsns. have given difficulties owing to their limited solubility resulting in a tendency of the compsns. to gel. The above compsns. have a good consistency and are anti-gelling.
