Abstract

Process for extracting active materials, esp. heteroside esters (I) of caffeic acid, from plants of the families Scrophulariaceae, orobanchaceae, Habiatae or Acanthaceae, comprises soaking the plants in an alcohol, such as ethanol or methanol; recovering and evaporating the alcohol extract; taking up the residue in water, extracting with ethyl acetate, then recovering the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction. Pref. the plants are first defatted with petrol and opt. the residue from the alcohol extract is also defatted with ehter and/or petrol. Also new are pharmaceutical compsns. contg.(I). (I) are esp. useful as potentiators of L-Dopa, particularly in treatment of Parkinson's disease. They inhibit the enzyme dopadecarboxylase so reduce the incidence of side effects and have a more intense and prolonged effect than synthetic cpds. such as caffeic acid. (I) are also beta-blockers; analgesics; antiinflammatories and psychotropic agents.
