Abstract
A batch distillation process and a boiler for a spirit still are claimed. Liquor to be distilled is drawn off near the bottom of the boiler, heated and then reintroduced at a higher level in the boiler so that a mainly downwards circulation is established in the boiler. Liquor drawn off from the boiler is pref. passed through the tubes of a shell and tube heat exchanger with the shell connected to a supply of steam or other suitable heating fluid. Used for distillation of spirits, particularly double-distilled spirits and esp. high quality brandy. Circulation within the still boiler shell is vastly improved so that the whole of the liquor is heated in a homogeneous fashion. Scaling is reduced so that thermal efficiency is improved and shell hot spots eliminated, thus preventing over temp. damage to flavour.
